AEF Talent Champion - Andy Deaza

Andy Deaza
Global Creative Strategist
TikTok

I’m Andy Deaza, but I was almost Chris. Luckily for me, a short conversation between my mother and grandmother on the day I was born curbed that. Anyway, I’m from The Bronx. For those who haven’t made the trip, it’s like the Elephant Graveyard in The Lion King, except it’s where The Yankees play, and we birthed hip hop.

I should probably mention that a while back I moved to South Beach to attend Miami Ad School, with a concentration in Art Direction. That’s really important because I am now a copywriter. I’ve held positions at JWT, Arnold New York, Mullen Lowe, FCB New York, and McCann. Acting on my love for diversity, I’m also a proud member of ADCOLOR®. I dealt copy at Spike Lee’s Spike DDB for two years, followed by stints as a creative resident at BBDO New York and associate creative director at McCann New York. I am currently a member of TikTok’s Global Creative Lab in service of their global business marketing team.

What prompted you to get involved with the AEF and why are you passionate about the future of the industry?

I like to think Sharon Hudson and the AEF found me. I was still a Junior Art Director when I was asked to speak for the first time and it really gave me a sense of purpose outside of making the actual work. As my career grew, so did my love for guest speaking and letting students know what potentially awaited them, if they chose this career path as well as giving them the confidence I wish I had coming up in the industry.

What is the best career advice you've ever received?

“You belong here, so don’t be surprised when things go right.”

Who was your favorite professor and why?

Ms. Williams. She was my freshmen/sophomore year art teacher and she just bought it to me as a person for some reason and there wasn’t very much to buy into at the time. Looking for her these days. I hope she’s well.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Creating. No matter if I’m creating something for the platform with my team or simply creating a conversation with someone on the broader global team. TikTok really is the ultimate hub for creativity right now. Of course, I’m bias.

"Our future marketing and advertising leaders are not just looking for a job, they are looking for a meaningful career that will make a positive impact on society."
— Gord McLean, President and CEO at ANA Educational Foundation
