2024 Talent Champion - Bryant

Bria Bryant
Global Chief Marketing Officer
Assembly
Bria Bryant’s career journey is as unique as it is inspiring. After years of working as a professional hair stylist, makeup artist, and fashion stylist, she boldly taught herself PR, pivoted into advertising, and co-founded Haute Behavior, an Atlanta-based boutique PR and experiential agency. Life changes landed her in New York, where she held senior leadership positions at MSL and Havas, with her path ultimately leading her to a Global CMO role at Assembly, one of the advertising industry’s most-watched media agencies. Bryant believes that the four Rs—driving relevance through culture, building reputation through transparency, fostering deep relationships that build business, and delivering meaningful communications that resonate are how you drive real impact, and the many Cannes Lions, Effies, Agency of the Year awards, and other industry accolades under her purview are the proof in the pudding. An award-winner herself, Bryant was honored in 2021 on PRWeek’s 40 Under 40 list, celebrating rising PR, communications, and marketing professionals dedicated to bringing more meaning, accountability, and authenticity to the field.

Bryant is one of the few individuals in advertising who has had the privilege of working at PR, Creative, and Media shops, allowing her to connect the dots and dream up outcomes in ways not many can. Throughout her nearly 20-year career, Bryant has consistently focused on creating campaigns and partnerships that drive positive change, support underrepresented communities, and address critical societal issues. Whether it’s enabling meaningful period conversations through the lens of non-binary and trans individuals for This is L, tackling the Black maternal healthcare crisis by ushering in a new wave of Black female doctors through a partnership with UNCF and Tampax, or launching the Gillette “Master of Style” campaign in collaboration with 100 Black Entrepreneurs to support men pursuing careers in barbering, Bryant leads with purpose. Additionally, she was instrumental in the launch of P&G’s cause initiative, My Black is Beautiful, and helped produce a documentary called “Imagine a Future,” directed by Oscar-nominated Lisa Cortes, that addressed colorism and struggles of self-acceptance among Black youth. She also advocated for and enabled the development of a documentary short called “Just Like Me” by TTK Harris, aimed at bringing more diversity into the advertising industry. With continued focus on increasing representation in advertising, Bryant consulted the ANA Educational Foundation on its HBCU initiative and contributed to its Diversity Disconnect Study, all with the goal of charting more inclusive pathways for growth for Black talent.

As a proud graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, GA, Bryant’s thirst for knowledge has never waned. Immersing herself in cultures from all corners of the globe, Bryant considers herself a student of the world, eager to learn new skills, gain a broader understanding of the human condition, and apply those learnings to her empathetic leadership approach. Extending to her personal life, in 2024, Bryant founded The Dweller Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization addressing climate change and humanity’s most urgent challenges, ensuring every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to our collective future.

I’m also excited about the industry’s emphasis on data-driven insights and ethical practices, as it enables us to create more meaningful campaigns and widens the aperture for professional development and positive change.

What is the best career advice you've ever received?

We are all works in progress, and you have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable because that’s the only way you’ll grow.

Why do you feel it is so important to inspire the next generation of diverse talent?

Inspiring the next generation of diverse talent in advertising is crucial because diversity brings fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that drive creativity and authenticity in our campaigns. By fostering an inclusive environment, we ensure that our industry reflects the rich tapestry of our society, enabling us to connect more deeply with a broader audience. Moreover, empowering diverse voices not only enhances the cultural relevance of our work but also promotes equity and representation, which are essential for the growth and ethical integrity of the advertising field.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy being a CMO because it allows me to shape my agency’s brand and market presence while continuously engaging the latest industry trends and innovations. This role also allows me to leverage my creativity, strategic thinking, and leadership skills to drive impactful marketing initiatives, and I get the satisfaction of knowing that I am directly influencing the company’s growth and success.

What is the most important skill students should have before they begin their career?

It’s less a skill and more a mindset. Always be curious and never stop learning. This mindset not only keeps you adaptable in a constantly changing industry but also fuels your passion and drive. Embracing continuous learning opens up new opportunities, helps you develop a diverse skill set, and keeps you ahead in your career.

What advice would you give to students as they consider entering the industry?

1. Believe in yourself and know that it takes daily practice. Wake up each morning with the conviction that you have the strength, skills, and intelligence to face whatever comes your way. It’s about acknowledging your worth and trusting your capacity to learn and grow. Self-belief is the force that turns setbacks into comebacks and challenges into opportunities.
2. Learn something new every day. Make it your goal to be able to talk about five different things with five different individuals or groups at any networking event. Being able to engage in conversation, have divergent thoughts, and remain open to new perspectives will take you incredibly far in just about every aspect of your life.
3. Never be afraid to speak up. Share your ideas even if you don’t think they are good. Share your opinion, even if you feel it’s controversial. A little provocation will take you a long way and will capture the attention of peers, press, senior leaders, clients, you name it.
4. Build a strong network and get some new friends. Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you. Your network determines your net worth.
5. Don’t be afraid to take risks, push boundaries, and question conventional wisdom. Innovation and progress emerge from the willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
6. Stay true to yourself and be prepared to share your personal experiences. People connect with real stories and authentic voices, and that will, in turn, make what you are saying more compelling.
7. Remember that you are enough. Though we all do this, try not to compare yourself to others. Instead, relish in your achievements, no matter how small they seem. Comparison is the thief of joy.
